Voters in the Stirling and Strathallan constituency will head to the polls today, Thursday, July 4, for the UK General Election. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate polling day, including the new requirement to show photo ID at polling stations.
Photo ID Requirement
For the first time, Scottish voters must present photo ID to vote at a polling station. Accepted forms include passports, driving licences, older person’s or disabled person’s bus passes, and Young Scot cards. Even expired IDs are valid if you can still be recognized from the photo. A full list of acceptable IDs is available at the Electoral Commission’s website.
If you forget your photo ID, you’ll need to return with an acceptable form. Polling stations will offer a private area, which might be a separate room or an area with a privacy screen, for you to show your ID discreetly.
For more information about the photo ID requirement, including accessible formats like audio, Braille, and BSL, visit the Electoral Commission’s voter ID resources page.
Polling Stations
Polling stations are open from 7 AM to 10 PM on July 4. Your assigned polling place is determined by your address and can be found on your poll card, received by mail. Be sure to verify your polling location, as it may have changed since the last election.
Postal Voting
All postal votes for Stirling and Strathallan have been delivered. If you’ve opted for a postal vote, you must use this method for this election. To cancel a postal vote, you needed to do so by 5 PM on June 19.
On polling day, completed postal votes can be handed in at any polling station in the constituency or at the reception at Old Viewforth, Stirling, between 7 AM and 10 PM. Voters can also authorize someone else to hand in their postal vote, with a maximum of five postal ballots allowed per person in addition to their own. A form must be completed when handing in postal votes.
If you haven’t received your postal vote, you can request a replacement from the Returning Officer at Old Viewforth, Stirling, between 9 AM and 5 PM until polling day. It’s recommended to call ahead (01786 233068) to streamline the process. Bring ID that confirms your name and address.
Proxy Voting
Your appointed proxy must vote at your polling station on your behalf and will need their own photo ID. Proxy voters receive a proxy poll card with details on where and when to vote. You can still vote in person if your proxy hasn’t yet voted for you.
For more details on proxy voting, visit the Stirling Council website.
